Traditional retirement accounts are pre-tax, this means that a contribution of this amount will also reduce your taxable income and the taxes you owe at the end of the year. ROTH retirement accounts are after-tax accounts. This means a contribution to a ROTH account will not reduce the amount of taxes you pay each year. A taxable account is one which offers no tax benefits, contributions are paid on an after-tax basis and taxes are paid on gains as you sell investments.
